Food adulteration means the act of intentionally adding or mixing any harmful substance to the food item to make it less pure. This is usually done to keep the food fresh for a long time and make them look attractive. Food loses its purity in this way. The dishonest and greedy businessmen, food manufacturers, processors, restaurant owners, and so forth are all involved in one way or another in this unethical practice of adulteration. Foods are adulterated by using various harmful chemicals and toxic artificial colors. Food adulteration in Bangladesh has increased alarmingly over the last few years. Basic food items in the market like meat, fish, fruits, oil, vegetables, spices, bakery items, and sweetmeats are being adulterated unscrupulously with hazardous chemicals. The poisonous chemicals in these food items are not only damaging vital human organs like the liver, kidney, and heart along with affecting children's mental and physical wellbeing but also causing fatal diseases like cancer, hepatitis B, heart attack, brain stroke. Not only the foodstuffs, but the life-saving medicines are also being adulterated. The government should take adequate measures to check food adulteration and ensure safe food. The law-enforcing agencies should maintain strong vigilance to detect such cases of adulteration.
